The band began as a loose collective of artists based in Durham, Ontario. A revolving cast of players gathered on Tuesday evenings to explore songwriting and arranging, and pick up new instruments and influences. A core group of players began performing their loose blend of alt-caberet locally as Hinterland and in the spring of 2005, rechristened Gigi Minor, recorded an eclectic selection of songs in a live, studio session in with Bruce Ross in Collingwood. The band has gone on to work in collaboration with experimental filmmakers Philip Hoffman, Iriz Paabo, Ilse Gassinger and Myke Dyer and recorded three of accomanying songs at the Monastereo, produced by Andrew McPherson. Who Taught You was recorded at Track Six and produced by Randy Martin. The two-disc release includes the four films with music, plus a seven track audio CD which includes three songs from the Collingwood sessions.
Philly Markowitz (vocal, accordion, percussion) is the host of Roots & Wings, reviewer for RootsWorld, compiler for Rough Guide CDs, mother of two free-range children and is active in many grass-roots community projects. Geoffrey Shea (bass, soprano sax, vocal, guitar) is a media artist. He teaches new media at the Ontario College of Art & Design.
Paul Nielsen (guitar) is a guitarist and photographer. Randy Martin (percussion, bass, flute) is a multi-instrumentalist and the owner/producer at Track Six Studio. Robin Rich (piano) plays jazz and R&B when she isn't minding the Saugeen Music School. Chris Risk (drums, harmonica) keeps things smooth and runds Sphere Works music store in Durham. Gillian Inksetter (clarinet) is a multi-intrumentalist committed to choral singing, among other things.
